Dutch word order

Clear patterns for main clauses, subordinate clauses, inversion, questions and sentences with multiple verbs.

Main clause (hoofdzin)

The finite verb takes the second position. Other verbs usually go at the end.

PatternExample
subjectfinite verbmiddle

subjectfinite verbmiddleother verbs
Ik wil morgen thuis werken.
subjectfinite verbmiddleother verbs
Ik heb gisteren thuis gewerkt.

Inversion (inversie)

When something other than the subject comes first, the finite verb comes next and the subject follows it.

PatternExample
time / place / signal wordfinite verbsubjectmiddle
Morgen werk ik thuis.

time / place / signal wordfinite verbsubjectmiddleother verbs

Subordinate clause (bijzin)

After omdat, als, dat, hoewel and similar conjunctions, the verb or verb group moves to the end.

PatternExample

conjunctionsubjectmiddleother verbs

Main and subordinate clauses

A subordinate clause can follow or precede the main clause. A main clause after it starts with inversion.

PatternExample
main clausesubordinate clause
Ik blijf thuis, omdat ik ziek ben.
subordinate clausemain clause
Omdat ik ziek ben, blijf ik thuis.
main clausesubordinate clause
Ik weet dat de cursus morgen begint.

En, maar, want, dus

These words connect two main clauses, so main-clause order remains after them.

PatternExample
main clausemain clause

main clausemain clause
Het plan is duur, maar het is nuttig.
main clausemain clause

Questions

Without a question word the finite verb comes first; with one, it comes immediately after it.

PatternExample

Werk jij morgen thuis?
question wordfinite verbsubjectmiddle
Wanneer werk jij thuis?
finite verbsubjectmiddleother verbs
Kun je mij morgen helpen?

Separable verbs

The separated part goes at the end of a main clause. In a subordinate clause the verb joins again.

PatternExample
subjectfinite verbmiddleseparable part

time / place / signal wordfinite verbsubjectmiddleseparable part

Te + infinitive

Te + infinitive usually comes at the end; purpose is often expressed with om … te.

PatternExample
subjectfinite verbmiddlete + infinitive

subjectfinite verbmiddlete + infinitive
Ik volg een cursus om beter te leren schrijven.
